I was able to combine a whole slew of skills into one time consuming activity: making a chart.
We were able to take a survey online of what favorite zoo animals people liked. Then we gathered the information, calculated the results, put them in graph form on paper, transferred the results to the computer…and VOILA a masterpiece! We had to do the math for the measurements of the page we did to make sure that everything fit, too. Here is the computer version of what the results were:

Today we got into a conversation about place value and where things go after a billion. Here is what we found in PDF form:
Number Places To Decillion.

Thanks to Channel 13 and the book fair at the Brooklyn Museum, we were able to enjoy a free day at the museum as well as meet some of our favorite characters from The Electric Company show. It was so much fun! My son had a ball.

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of PlayStation MOVE. All opinions are 100% mine.
If someone were to give our family a Playstation Move, I would be thrilled but my son and my husband would be ecstatic. I am sure that I would only get to see the box once before it was set up and ready to go. I know that they would suck me into a heated physical battle on Sports Champions. I have a feeling that I would never pass many nights without engaging in some form of gaming together.
Being a family that LOVES to play games together, whether it be board games or video games, we would find countless hours of fun in the games available for the Move. I can also see where there would be individual play for myself ( Get Fit with Mel B ), for my husband ( Resident Evil 5 ), and my son ( Kung Fu Rider ).
For myself, I know that I love getting healthy and fit. My favorite by far will be the exercise game. I need that kind of accountability to stay focused! As for my son, anything that helps him with his hand-eye coordination, strategy, logic, and critical thinking skills will be beneficial. I have never seen video games as something that will be detrimental to a child as long as they are monitored in their usage. The types of games they play is vital, as well. I tend to pick the ones that will help him in skill such as those I have mentioned so that he is always improving. My husband will play whatever catches his fancy, which is usually something Tom Clancy has provided or something along those same lines. He is always challenging himself.
Meanwhile, I will be dreaming of someone giving us this *and the Playstation* for free while staring at it in the store. It’s only $99 to add the Move bundle to your existing Playstation 3. I am sure there will be other deals for those of us who do not own a PS3 coming out as Christmas approaches. I am looking forward to it!

Yesterday, he put together his United States mini map puzzle. In addition, we pulled out the workbooks I just recently bought for him. He was able to point out the states where there are some very prominent landmarks like Mount Rushmore. He was also able to show me on his puzzle the different places that we have traveled as well as the places that his friends have lived or visited. Pretty cool!

Full blast. We have started reviewing some old concepts as well as building upon them to learn new ones. The fun part is that he is actually GETTING it!!!
Today he did front-end estimation for sets of two and three digit numbers. He also learned the art of subtracting numbers that are small on top and large on bottom such as 237-149.
Science we did some simple schooling about bees & insects.
Natural history & life science all were covered yesterday with programs about crocodiles past, present, and future.
We have been working on different aspect of vocabulary and writing every day.
All in all, things are going well. Praise the Lord!
Today I found a very nicely done academic testing site on Learning By Grace. I decided to see if my mental assessments of his achievements were on point or not. So far, we have completed the the Language Arts testing and found that he is on a 2nd grade level, which is what I suspected. We are still working on the math testing, as he always gets jittery when it comes to math. He is good in it when he realizes it’s just numbers, but sometimes he lets the page overwhelm him.

I think our homeschool is evolving from strictly unschooling to something with just a little more structure. I have signed him up for Simple Schooling online which gives us unit studies to follow. We just received a Veggie Tales bible and a few nice picture bibles and devotionals so I plan to add in assignments from those. I want to work us up to having more discipline in what he is learning so he can become consistent in his success. It will also help me to keep better records of what we are doing. Once we get our official address in New York, I will need to keep some form of records to be able to report his progress to the state.
Still not classical homeschooling, as we are mostly free and we don’t use one full curriculum. We are still able to move from subject to subject as in depth as we would like.

Today he read 4 books in a row. Took him less than an hour, and one of them was quite long. I am very proud of his reading progress. With shows like Electric Company, Word World, and Super Why he is being constantly reminded of how words spell & sound. It’s awesome!
