pqt bvdjw
Yesterday my son got an impromptu lesson from his father on how to fix a DVD player and a VCR. He got a good look at the inner workings, and was allowed to help screw bolts into place.

They played the historic Samurai game again, too.

Today we talked about the Vascular system. He wanted to know why his father takes pills. We talked about high blood pressure, veins, and then he was done. He got squeamish when he saw the pictures of the blood vessels online. They weren’t really that graphic, but they made him uncomfortable. I’m like this from the boy who gets excited at movie carnage LOL.

We are planning a trip to Chuck E. Cheese on Monday. I joined a field trip group in New Jersey and we are hoping to get to Longwood Gardens for the Christmas fanfare with them.

pqt bvdjw
Since I am going through this attitude and cleaning transformation, I figured I would get my son involved, too. Today we played a game I called the Get Rid of It game. I told him to go find 10 things he truly, honestly did not want in his room, gave him 10 minutes, and we were off.

At first, he was just like “whoohoo! a game! ten things! got it!” and ran back with a few toys I know he plays with on a regular basis. He still had time left, so he ran back and replaced the 3 things that he actually did want with things that he no longer wants or needs. After that, we decided where each thing would go (donate, pass down, trash). Three things are going to his cousin on the way, a few things were trash, and there was really nothing else to do with the stuff. He was so excited that he wants to play the game every day.

We were already working on his room zones. First day, it was behind his door and what he could see from my seat in the living room in his doorway. Second day, under the desk and the doorway. Third day, all the things on the floor that you can’t see from my seat…and we will continue on.

I realize he is like me in that he sees a lot of things and gets overwhelmed really quickly. Now that I am learning to break it down for myself, it’s easier for me to help him break it down.

pqt bvdjw
How do you curb the independence of a free thinking 5 year old?

This child of mine decided, after SO many times of warning him NOT to go near the door when someone knocks, that he should answer the door this morning. His father and I were still dozing and didn’t hear him leave his room. We did hear the knock on the door, but thought it was next door. Next thing I know, my son is coming in to report that he just opened the door for this guy with a basketball shirt on who was asking for his father!

Our first reaction of course was WHY??? He replies with “but he didn’t steal me!”… because, of course, that was part of our reasons for him to stay away from the door. Now, I don’t know which guy came to see my husband. My son didn’t relock the door, but left it open enough that anyone could have come in. The guy was no longer anywhere near the house so I couldn’t see him as he was leaving. I am just nonplussed. I am so angry and … well… at a loss.

What type of punishment would you inflict on this child? So far, he still has no video games and he is sitting in the corner. He still does not get what the big deal is about him opening the door to people, especially since (as he says) he asked “who is it?” before answering!! ACK!!! Now I am paranoid. I might end up sleeping on the couch just to make sure that I know where he is at all times.

We learned the proper way to cross a road, hand signals, and the way to follow safely on the bike. Now the only thing we are missing for his road test is his helmet. Road test, meaning we can leave the apartment complex and cross the street.

Yesterday, we got a hands on, up close and personal look at Native American Indian culture. It was the POWWOW!!! We had a blast, got to chat it up with our cousins, and watch some awesome dancing. I adore the dance competitions, although Taz was unnerved by the massive costuming.

pqt bvdjw
Easy workbook pages, hard lesson: following directions. The whole point today is for him to follow the directions as given, not to do what has not been asked of him such as, if the paper says color the triangles green, don’t color the rectangles blue. Well, at least not until after I have seen that you followed the directions. The other thins is that he does his best and not JUST ENOUGH to get by, which usually means that the work is done but very very sloppy. It’s the moderation we are having issues with, not to mention the LISTENING that is involved in paying attention to follow said directions.

What better way to tell someone than to show them? So our field trip for the day will be he and I going into our local municipality to vote for Senate and whatnot. It will give him a sense of how things work, and make it so that I will already know the system when the “big vote” comes up in the fall.

She gave him a dollar to put in the baby bottles at our church and a dollar for ice cream.

The baby bottle program is designed to donate money to babies that would otherwise die without it. There is a whole ministry that gives out these little bottles so you can fill them with change, paper money, or a check to give to the Pregnancy Support Center ministry.

Well, since my son had a dollar for it, and I told him why they were giving out bottles, he decided he wanted to give for the cause. He even showed the bottle to his father and said “This is to save a baby’s life!”

On Saturday morning, we went over to visit his grandparents and on the way out they gave him some money. Three one dollar bills to give to Royal Rangers on Wednesdays, and a five dollar bill for himself.

Yesterday, I asked him to get his wallet and give one of the dollar bills to put in the baby bottle. He took out his money, unwrapped the 5 dollar bill and gave it to me. I said “are you sure you want to put this in the bottle, and not a one dollar bill?”. He replies that he is sure, because he is 5 years old and the money is 5 dollars. Confused, I put the money in and thought I would ask him to clarify later.

Later came, and I asked him again “Are you sure you want to put the 5 dollar bill in the bottle?”

This was his reply:

“Yes. I’m giving 5 dollars because I want the baby to be 5 years old like me.”

this story transpired even before he gave his heart to God last night

pqt bvdjw
My son is mixed race. No one would be able to tell that he isn’t Puerto Rican in full unless they saw me. The Mexican children in our area won’t really play with him because he is mixed. If they never saw me, but saw my son with his father all the time, they wouldn’t be that way.

Just the other day he was shunned by children in the neighborhood. He was being called black instead of by his name. They didn’t want him to play with them. The black children pushed him away from the game because the other kids didn’t want to play with him. One of the black children will play with my son any other time, but not that day with that group of children.

My son was heartbroken and I was beyond livid. His own good friend hurt him deeply by not wanting him to play. His cousin had to tell him to stop being ignorant and let my son play. The other black boy got told by me to leave him alone.

The Mexican children, though, got away with saying what they said. They didn’t get outright ignorant with my son, but I heard what they said. They never called him or the other boys by name, only called them black. My son, they called black, because I am “black”. They wouldn’t even talk to him. He was in their faces and they just completely ignored him like he was wind blowing past…they do it every time. My son always stands up for himself, but they still act like he never was even standing there.

I saw red that day. I am so tired of my son being discriminated against for being mixed. Never did I imagine that he would deal with these issues…especially from another minority. That was MY life, I didn’t want it to be his.
It’s cheerios, raisins, and marshmallows all together in one bowl. My mother used to make a huge bowl of this and give it to us 3 in the morning as our breakfast. It wasn’t every day, but it was great when we could have it. I have to say that I felt proud being able to share this with my own son so many years later. He lapped it up, since these are 3 of his favorite foods.
