pqt bvdjw
We are planning to do a full summer of science. As part of this, I want to include at least 3 trips. One of those will be taken care of by the Y Summer Camp, but the other 2 will be on us. I was looking at DaVinci Center. It’s cheap, close, and has exactly what we were looking for in a museum. I would love to also take him to the Franklin Institute at some point. I don’t know if he could handle the Insectarium, as bugs freak us both out to an extent.

We will also be utilizing his 501 Science Experiments book that his godmother gave him for his birthday. It will be a fun summer of exploration!!!

pqt bvdjw
Yesterday my son got an impromptu lesson from his father on how to fix a DVD player and a VCR. He got a good look at the inner workings, and was allowed to help screw bolts into place.

They played the historic Samurai game again, too.

Today we talked about the Vascular system. He wanted to know why his father takes pills. We talked about high blood pressure, veins, and then he was done. He got squeamish when he saw the pictures of the blood vessels online. They weren’t really that graphic, but they made him uncomfortable. I’m like this from the boy who gets excited at movie carnage LOL.

We are planning a trip to Chuck E. Cheese on Monday. I joined a field trip group in New Jersey and we are hoping to get to Longwood Gardens for the Christmas fanfare with them.

pqt bvdjw
Today we are talking about S words and the science of the Sun. There are some good pages on EnchantedLearning.com for easy explanations of how the sun works, where it is in our solar system, and whatnot.

We are also talking about the Son of God and how He is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 110:105). He wrote the letter S and practiced his name. He also drew some pictures of things that begin with S.

We did an experiment with force today. We used ourselves, different sized Care Bears, and my spinning computer chair in order to show how things that weigh differently will spin at different rates of speed in the chair. Explaining force, gravity, centrifugal force, and inertia to a 5 year old isn’t easy, but he gets the gist of it.

Later on today I will do some more things but right now it’s break time.

pqt bvdjw
pqt bvdjw Being that it is spring and all that, I thought it would be a timely gesture to buy my son a subscription to Your Big Backyard magazine. We got our first one last week and read the entire thing in one sitting. He was fascinated to find out about how birds live, eat, have babies and all that. There was plenty of information for him to absorb. We will likely read it about 3 more times before we get the next issue. After we read it, we went for a walk outside so he could look for the bird he learned about, the nest, and all that. He found them *robins* and had so much fun chattering about what he had just learned.

pqt bvdjw
pqt bvdjw We had some cooking lessons going on at the house for Thanksgiving. You can see that great adventure here.

My friend Sam showed me this about how others are homeschooling in a child-led fashion successfully. It’s in the New York Times.

It’s so satisfying to read about things like this. They just help to spurn me on to continue doing what I am doing.

I also want to draw your attention to some free stuff for homeschooling. Check it out. I love getting the emails and using their products. It’s one of the best sties out there for homeschooling.
