Knitting, Bible, American History, and Math

Today he finally got the hang of the knit stitch. I found a way for him to do continental style that matches the way his brain works. He did a full row of 8 stitches by himself, 7 of which were flawless. He is looking forward to doing more another day. This video helped him, [...]

Homeschool / new rules

I checked out the standards for K-2 grades in New Jersey on the education website yesterday. I was surprised to find out how advanced my son really is compared to their standards. Technically, he really is in early 2nd grade. I had a feeling he was, but never checked till then. The only things we [...]

Learning online today

We continued our practice of regrouping and carrying numbers on http://www.dositey.com this afternoon. We also worked on phonics, since it seems that he is still getting mightily confused on his D/B and long/short vowels. It’s tiring, but worth it.

Counting to 100

He just returned from a lengthy visit with the in-laws and says to me: Mommy, I want to tell you something. I can count to 100. 1, 2, 3… He makes it all the way to one hundred with barely a reminder from me about the next set of ten! This kid!!! I guess we [...]

Books: The Best Vacation & Whining

We just read The Best Vacation Ever by Stuart J. Murphy and A Children’s Book about Whining by Joy Berry. I think I will continue in the series of books that are supposed to help the child build a better character. I read that one to him, but he helped me read the book about [...]

More reading & the fruits of the spirit

Today he decided to do more words. I cannot stop this kid! He is loving learning on his little chalkboard easel. We did a number of words. He also remembered that some words have a long A sound because they end in E. The two words he did today for that were cake and cage. [...]

10 pages in 3 minutes

Today was a pretty okay day for learning. I let his father take over the Math lesson to give me a break, and give him a feel for what I go through nearly every day! That took an hour, even with his father right next to him helping. The kid just DOESN’T want to do [...]

Math vs Taz

Pennies, fingers, flash cards, jumping jacks, other objects, math out loud… He is STILL fighting math. Right now he is working on a page that should have taken him about 1/2 hour. It’s now nearly an hour and a half. I am so tired of this. He KNOWS most of this crap. It’s the fact [...]

Math, Phonics, Reading & more

Today we got him his second library card. When he was younger, he had one for the local library where we lived. He would never remember getting it, since he was so small. Now, he is excited to be able to take 4 books from the library every 2 weeks. He picked out some really [...]

Math: the bane of our existence

Okay my poor son has inherited the “I abhor math” gene. I feel bad for him. My husband loves math, is a whiz at it. I was hoping the kid would get that gene, but he didn’t. Even with pennies to help him figure out the problems, he is telling me it’s too hard and [...]
