Wimpy Kid sparks reading

WOW My son saw the movie and began to voraciously devour the books themselves. He read the first book in five days, the second book in two and a half days, and today he began the third book and is only half an inch from finishing it. Thank God for the library and me getting him the last three books before I go on retreat and his father has him at work with him. He will be good and occupied while his father works. He will still be doing his daily math, history, handwriting, Bible, and science… but this wimpy kid series has him captivated so he is reading all day, afternoon, and all the way till bedtime. So great to see him get into reading so much more than ever before.

He leads me

We are still doing the Bible study line by line of Psalm 23. We are up to "He leads me beside the still waters". My son is already asking what "still waters" means as he writes the sentence. We get in grammar, reading, spelling, punctuation, and writing practice at the same time we do Bible study, critical thinking, and analysis. I am glad that we can do so much with the Word of God.

Reading and the Inauguration

Today we learned practiced reading a bit, did some phonics, and learned more about the new President. I used the biography at enchanted learning, as well as the coloring page of the President’s face with the small bio. On Tuesday we chatted about the significance of this president a bit more. He understands why it’s important.

We also reviewed the commandments we have learned and learned the fifth:

Today we were reading the first 9 pages of Trouble at the Bridge
and I realized what a hard time he was having with common endings and letter groups in the middle of words. Since I taught him phonics and not sight words, it is a bit more difficult for him to understand the whole concept of two letters going together to make one sound. We made flash cards with a few endings and letter groups. Right now, he is thinking of ways to use them in words he already knows, and writing those words 3 or 4 times each.

I am in the process of locating a good history idea to teach him something about history. I will more than likely begin in New Jersey and expand his horizon from there. That way, he gets history and geography at the same time.

Science: Birds Unit

Today we started a unit study called Birds. We did the general anatomy of birds. I had him draw a bird, then we labeled the parts. He had to figure out from sounding out the words how they were spelled. Then, he told me some parts that we didn’t write out *stuck to four letter words today*. On the back, I had him write his first and last name, the numeric date, and the written out date.

I checked out the standards for K-2 grades in New Jersey on the education website yesterday. I was surprised to find out how advanced my son really is compared to their standards. Technically, he really is in early 2nd grade. I had a feeling he was, but never checked till then. The only things we haven’t really put a stress on are history and science. Everything else looks good. I will be probably be taking him to some museums next year.

I mean, he is only 5. I have until he is at least 7 to get more culture and experience under his belt to call 2nd grade done. He is advancing at a staggering rate. If he keeps this up, he will be finished school when he is 14!

I decided to try and concentrate on only two subjects per day to make sure he is really getting what he is learning. We did 3 addends yesterday. Today we are doing english/reading/writing which all go hand in hand.

I also decided to start doing the happy face/sad face form of discipline. He hates getting negative feedback, so I am hoping that this will work well for us.

We continued our practice of regrouping and carrying numbers on http://www.dositey.com this afternoon. We also worked on phonics, since it seems that he is still getting mightily confused on his D/B and long/short vowels. It’s tiring, but worth it.

Homeschool: listening skills

OMG The last week has been a disaster for listening skills. I have been trying really hard not to get angry with him. REALLY!!! It’s like he wants to do school but then he doesn’t want to do what the instructions say he should. I’m like UM OK … >_< let’s try again. We aren’t even trying to do too much reading comprehension save reviewing more of the Moses story. Right now we are at the point in the story where they get manna from heaven. I give him mini quizzes about the story while I am reading to see if he is understanding it. He does, but then he is like off in a trance sometimes. *sigh* Five year olds.

Hands On Bible & other things

Yesterday, we took a trek over to our favorite Bible shop and bought a few things. We got my son a bookmark with Bob the Tomato from Veggie Tales. It says “God made you special and he loves you very much”. We also bought him the Hands-On Bible NLT and VeggieTales – Moe & The Big Exit. The owner of the store is our very good friend, and so gave our son a CD of worship songs for kids called Shout Praises!: Kids Shout to the Lord. He is enjoying all of his new things. We read part of the Moses story today for Bible after he watched the Moe dvd. He has yet to listen to the songs on the cd, but he knows a few of them already.
