Dr. Phil is a Dolt
Posted by Taz's Mom on November 29th, 2006 filed in Carnival, Homeschool, UnschoolOr is he? He is rather smart in making his show slant to fit his own narrow-minded beliefs. I was reading about how he had another show on Homeschool and yet again slanted it to make us look like a bunch of lunatics who are abusing our children by not allowing them the privilege of attending public school. In this same way he has bashed extended breastfeeding, co-sleeping, and many other lifestyle choices in which he has no interest or actual first hand knowledge.
Here is the perspective of a woman who was actually part of the special guest audience.
So why is everyone up in arms about homeschool? Was not homeschool the only school for hundreds of years? God didn’t set up a public school in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve didn’t kiss their children goodbye as they boarded the camel bus to go to the nearby public school when they were five years old. What makes people think that children being taught by their mothers and fathers is such a bad thing? This entire world system came from parents teaching their children who in turn taught their children, etc.
Public education began in Greece and migrated to different parts of the world until the pilgrims decided to invade…umm…settle in new territory. They brought the concept of public schools with them.
Now, I don’t have a problem with public schools in general. I have a problem with someone telling me that I don’t have the right or resource to teach my child at home with the same OR better education than he would receive in these public schools. I don’t see how the argument for socialization comes into play because our children socialize with all ages, races, colors, religions, and creeds on a continual basis. Our children get to see the world as it really works, and not through the eyes of children bunched up on top of each other in a school room.
Tell me, how do children really socialize in school? They mostly do NOT. They are made to get to class on time, sit still, and not to talk unless you are asking the teacher a question. The only time they get to fraternize is before school, after school, a mere minute between classes, and at lunch. How is this fully promoting social interaction?
Our children get to talk to anyone at any time. They can ask questions without raising their hands. They are allowed to run around instead of sit still and wait for their turn to be spoken to by one adult. Their world is open and free without the pretext of cliques, crews, drugs, bad behavior, peer pressure, embarrassment from puberty, and whatnot. I am sure that many children who are homeschooled live happier, healthier lives without self-esteem issues because they were not exposed to the taunts and teasing of their peers.
So yes, Dr. Phil is a dolt who is not interested in truth but HIS truth. I am tired of his self-promoting propaganda. You can’t even get through one show without him somehow working in his book about Love. I am sick of the way he unfairly represents people.
Homeschool is still school…the school of life. I don’t care what he thinks, the proof is in the children who grow up to be successful well adjusted adults.
